NYC Daytrip: Greenwich, CT

    Greenwich

    Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich, CT

NYC – Waking up in NYC, wanting something different?  For the adventuresome, your summer will feel complete when you experience a little known gem of a beach, and a breathtaking boat ride on Long Island Sound.

    1. Hop on an express train at Grand Central to Greenwich, CT and you’ll be there in under an hour. The Island Beach boat dock is a five minute walk from the train station, but if you want to enjoy the beach, you need to buy a Non-Resident Beach Pass (only $6) from the Town Hall (grab a cab from the station, and ask the driver to wait while you run in). Then have the cab take you to the Island Beach boat dock where the ferry leaves regularly (check the schedule here).

Take a Ferry Ride from Greenwich Harbo

    2. A 20 minute ride out of Greenwich Harbor and into the Sound allows you to see magnificent waterfront estates on both sides and enjoy your minutes in the sun and the cool breeze. Relax. Daydream. Let your city worries float away.

    3. When the ferry reaches Island Beach, you will be surprised at its beauty. A boardwalk separates the two sides of the beach. When you’ve had enough sun, a large, tree-shaded picnic area offers an alternative to sitting on the beach. The island has locker rooms, showers, bathrooms and a very good concession stand.  If you have children with you, they will be in heaven. All you need to carry is a bag with bathing suits, towels and sun tan lotion. The kids can carry their pails and shovels.

    4. Back in Greenwich, L’Escale, across from the dock is a romantic, somewhat expensive spot to have a drink while enjoying more amazing water views. Treat yourself to a refreshing glass of Rose and an excellent tuna tartare appetizer. Looking for something more kid friendly and moderately priced? You’re one block from the bottom of Greenwich Avenue. Sundown Saloon has a cool bar and back room, which features booths, paper tablecloths and crayons as well as great food. Their pulled pork and cheeseburger sliders are phenomenal. The buffalo chicken salad is out of this world! They also have some great beers on tap, including Allagash and Blue Moon, two of my favorites.

After a fun day outside and a good meal, take the reverse commute to Grand Central. Feel free to doze on the train. Your city friends will like your new tan.  You’ll love your time in Greenwich and we hope you will come back soon.
