1. We recommend starting off at El Quinto Pino, a small but authentic neighborhood tapas bar tucked away on a quiet residential Chelsea street. Order a couple aperitivos ($4) and a pitcher of sangria and grab one of the very few seats at the bar and you’ll feel like you’re transported to Spain as you watch the tiny open kitchen work magic.
2. Where else can you see world class actors like Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman,Will Ferrell and Alec Baldwin perform 3-5 shows an evening incorporating improv, sketch and stand-up comedy for under $8 a pop (and some shows are free) any night of the week!?! At one of our favorite stops in New York, the Upright Citizens Brigade, were there are over 25 original shows a week and never a drink minimum. Actually, there are two UCB theater schedules in town to keep on your radar: one in Chelsea and the other is in the East Village.
3. Last stop is a late night dinner (served until 3AM) at Trailer Park and Lounge (look for the famous cigarette porcelain toilet out front). Make sure to order the Paradise Hawaiian Style (serves 2) with three kinds of rum served in a real pineapple at the Tacky Tiki Bar, kick back and enjoy the redneck atmosphere. The dinner menu is all about comfort food, so try the sloppy joe, Philly cheesesteak or double wide burger grilled to “backyard perfection.” The place is a real hoot and the price is just right!
