NY – When New York jewelry designer Jessica Mindich first told us about her new line The Caliber Collection, we were immediately intrigued. It’s an inspired idea: acquire reclaimed guns and bullet casings taken off the streets of Newark, New Jersey and use those materials to make a product that would turn something destructive into a symbol of renewal. Ingeniously, the proceeds would generate funds to further support the expansion of gun buy-back and amnesty programs in Newark and other cities across the nation. And, this was all before the devastating and tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut last week.
When Jessica learned that Mayor Cory Booker was in a quandry over what to do with a serious stockpile of weapons that had been received via Newark’s no-questions-asked gun buyback program, she quickly sprang into action with a solution and designed these classic bracelets that each carry the serial number of the gun from which they came and come packaged in an “evidence” bag.
